Profile bio

About Allen Nieman

I'm Allen Nieman and I solve problems. I'm a techie business guy with experience and success in product management, marketing, and operations. I've had full P&L ownership and I've been an individual contributor. I'm a leader and a follower. I love working with startups and entrepreneurial people and teams. My side hustle is investing and I've been investing in private and public markets since I was in college. Some background:I took the broad product experience I gained early in my career at Microsoft to an executive position in a startup, responsible for product and marketing, that I helped grow and pivot successfully. I conceived of, launched, and led a new consumer subscription business inside that startup that grew from zero to $1MM ARR in its first year. I was instrumental in driving the sale of that startup and resulting shareholder liquidity. After that I led the consumer business, with full P&L responsibilty, at a small-cap public software and services company with a focus on product, marketing, and customer acquisition. In my last year there I partnered with our engineering leader to design and launch an enterprise SaaS product that helped companies improve their support of consumer technology. I acquired the initial set of enterprise customers for that product. Later, I developed strategic deals, consulted in sales ops, and lead product management in different roles at other companies. I have been intimately involved in both sell and buy side M&A deals. I have brought products to market and acquired customers both B2C and B2B. I have invested in several startups and conducted due diligence on many more. Other interesting facts: I'm also a licensed CPA in the state of Washington (though I do not hold myself out) and I served as a non-commissioned officer (NCO) in the US Marine Corps. This experience, taken together, gives me a unique perspective and ability to find solutions and lead teams that drive results for complex businesses. I offer a can-do attitude and both tactical and executive/owner-level experience driving business. Whether it's marketing, product management, finance, investing, business operations, customer acquisition, technology leadership, revenue responsibility, e-commerce, analytics, or negotiating, I take results seriously. Customer success, shareholder value, driving revenue, and profit dollars are the ultimate metrics. Specialties: I get sh*t done.[Some common misspellings of my surname to help people find me via LinkedIn search: Niemen, Niemann, Neiman, Neimann, Neimen.]

Listed skills include Product Management, Saas, Strategic Partnerships, E Commerce, and 32 others.

Ultimately, I played a pivotal role in the acquisition of the company to Support.com (NASDAQ: SPRT) in December 2009.

Apr 2006 - Dec 2009

Director, Channel Strategy

Redmond, Washington, Us

I joined Microsoft as a college hire. My goal at Microsoft was to gain experience and have success across business disciplines and position myself to successfully run a business. I achieved that goal and helped Microsoft generate millions of dollars in revenue, ship great products, and make customers happy along the way. My last role at Microsoft was as Director of Channel Strategy. I designed and implemented the strategy, policies, and incentive funding for Microsoft's licensing channel of large account resellers and enterprise advisors. Before this strategy role, I held positions in product management, program management, business planning and analysis, and engineering. As a product manager I brought customer and market insight together to inform product engineering for Windows and Office. I positioned and messaged my product capability sets to create effective marketing collateral. I defined and executed with our agency the public relations strategy, and was the spokesperson, for Microsoft's anti-piracy technology efforts in Windows. I also wrote chapters for two MS Press books on Windows Server. As a program manager, I wrote a business plan and then executed it to start a Microsoft subsidiary company, located in Reno, NV, specifically for commercial software licensing. As a business analyst, I created applications and visualizations of business data to help management make better decisions. I designed the business processes of Microsoft's volume licensing order processing system which went on to transact billions of dollars of revenue and millions of e-commerce transactions. At the very beginning, as a software test engineer, I ensured the quality and to specification operation of finance and accounting products Microsoft Money and Microsoft Profit.

♦ Here is a list of some of the things from early in my life that made me who I am today ♦ My first programming experience was writing a Missile Command-like game on a Commodore VIC-20 (with the 8k expansion pack!). In junior high I was voted "Class Clown". In high school I was voted "Best Dressed". I got my first job at an auto body shop before I was old enough to drive. From there, as a young man I honed my work ethic and people skills by mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, flipping burgers, managing other people who were flipping burgers, teaching Tae Kwon Do, manufacturing landscape products, building roads, digging ditches, falling trees, operating heavy machinery, volunteering as a firefighter, assisting arbitration negotiations with statistical analysis for a professional baseball player, and later, selling and servicing computers and networks to small and medium businesses. I also proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where I earned all of my promotions meritoriously; Semper Fidelis.
