About Allen Wang
Hello! I'm a service designer and researcher with a passion for speculative and critical thinking. I'm currently pursuing a research interest at Harvard GSD around service-delivery in the expanded field—taking it into non-western contexts outside the corporate realm, towards its entanglements with culture, built environments, and ecologies. I recently completed some fieldwork in Nepal's Everest region and Morocco in support of this. Currently going through the analysis. My work explores the complexities of human perspectives as they manifest in our interactions with environments, technologies, and people around us. Services are the sum of complex patterns of human behaviours surrounding touchpoints between providers and consumers. Unlike outputs in other design fields, services are ambiguous because no single actor has a holistic view and no holistic view reflects the nuances of each individual interaction. User research and facilitation help us navigate in the face of ambiguity and align stakeholders on timely, incremental interventions.Outside of design, I pursue hobbies in classical music, digital photography, and travel. I maintain a broad spattering of liberal arts interests, from avant-gardism to continental philosophy to languages, and enjoy reading Wikipedia in my spare time. As a long-term project, I've been working towards a novel over the past twelve years or so, on-and-off.
Listed skills include Proofreading, Philosophy, Music, Rhetoric, and 22 others.

Summer Fellow
As an intern in the Newport News Innovation Office, I planned and executed a ten-week project to identify and prioritize use-cases for Generative AI to improve the city's services and operations. Tasks included discovery interviews, stakeholder workshops, and market research, culminating in a final report and AI roadmap for the city.Read more about the project ("Innovating City Services with Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Strategic Exploration") here: https://www.cityleadership.harvard.edu/innovating-city-services-with-generative-artificial-intelligence-ai-a-strategic-exploration/
Research Assistant
Created data templates and dashboards in Excel and Power BI to help Success Planning communities across the US better report on and visualize their program delivery and success metrics over time. My work looked not just at how to visualize the data, but how to streamline the workflows for both the communities and the Ed Redesign Lab around using this data.
Freelance Researcher
Completing research contracts for non-profit organizations on a part-time basis.
Service Designer
As a member of the Enterprise Transformation Directorate, I applied design thinking to support activities in SSC's organizational transformation agenda and to improve service-delivery to other departments across the Government of Canada, through a internal consultancy-like model. My duties included the full gamut of service design work, including project planning, interview/workshop facilitation, data analysis, report writing, executive briefings, and collaborating with clients and stakeholders. In two years, I facilitated or co-facilitated 100+ hours of consultations with 500+ stakeholders across ten projects, covering topics like the return to worksites, corporate reporting, business intake, personnel security screening, and artificial intelligence service offerings. I also worked on a variety of internal projects to streamline the team's work, including a service design playbook, a feedback collection process, and document templates.
Communication Designer
I worked in the Canadian Centre for Energy Information (Statistics Canada's online hub for energy data) to help communicate complicated statistical concepts in an approachable yet accurate manner for expert and non-expert users alike. My main project led to webpage layouts and content to disambiguate between two sets of greenhouse gas emissions data (the National Inventory Report and the Physical Flow Accounts). To appease tensions between data owners in this project, I pivoted from graphic design strategies in favour of a facilitation-based approach to develop the pages through co-creation workshops. Through this project and similar work on labour statistics, I championed human-centred thinking in an otherwise SME-driven organization.
Coordinator, Database And Community Mapping
I completed a community mapping initiative for a Toronto-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to equipping youth with financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills through in-school and extra-curricular programs delivered by volunteers. The outcome of that initiative was The Achievement Potential Report, a 448-page document containing 109,986 data points across 518 maps identifying 43 underserved communities and community-clusters across the organization's charter area.As the sole researcher on the project, I applied participatory design methods to engage internal stakeholders, taught myself Python libraries for census data collection and geospatial visualization, and applied my skills in literature review, copywriting, and graphic design to assemble this output—in only two months.
