I learned invaluable life lessons from both the labor and the farmers, who shared their visions for the future and their insights on economic and environmental sustainability. Meanwhile, I learned more about Aboriginal rights issues, navigated migrant labor laws, bonded with a 31-year-old camper van, stumbled upon wildlife like echidnas and pademelons, and volunteered at a weeklong international folk festival. Then I spent three months in Southeast Asia. I experienced the many contrasts of Hindu Bali and Muslim Lombok in Indonesia and hiked to a quiet Buddhist temple at sunrise in Thailand. I got drenched during the region’s New Year water festival, learned to motorbike on death-defying roads in Vietnam, saw how Chinese dam construction was impacting people in Laos, and talked with locals about the ongoing impacts of the American War. I returned to the U.S. with a more intimate understanding of the struggles and similarities of people around the world and a renewed focus on global and local sustainability, equity, and justice efforts. I navigated new (to me) traditions, perspectives, cities, villages, transportation systems, bureaucracies, and borders. I made lasting friendships and strengthened my communication skills through communal living and countless conversations on bumpy bus rides. I learned to expect the unexpected, adapt quickly, and trust my instincts. Ultimately, I gained a greater sense of humility, curiosity, and self-reliance as well as a better understanding of humanity's shared values and interdependence. Show less
