Early in my career as a prosecuting attorney I recognized a barrier at domestic violence shelters: they were not accepting families with pets. I started teaching about this in 2000, formally launched the SAF-T Program in October 2010 and it became a non profit in January 2018. I wrote the SAF-T Start-Up Guide to clearly and concisely outline how a domestic violence shelter can create on-site pet housing. With 68% of American homes having a pet and up to 65% of women refusing or delaying leaving an abusive home out of fear of leaving their pets or livestock behind, SAF-T is saving lives. The program has grown to over 150 shelters in the US (covering 39 states), Canada, Australia, Netherlands, and New Zealand. I created the National Center for Prosecution of Animal Abuse, a program of NDAA, in May 2011 in partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Animal Legal Defense Fund. This is a wonderful opportunity to be innovative in providing training and assistance to prosecutors and allied professionals on how to handle the complexities of animal abuse cases. I was also Deputy Director (Sept 2011 - March 2015) and Interim Director (Nov 2013 - October 2014) of the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse where I was focusing on integrating training about animal abuse and therapy animals into the child protection profession.

Responsible for legislative agenda; federal and state advocacy on child and animal welfare issues. Authored Michigan’s 2009-10 anti-pound seizure bill and co-authored the anti-gas chamber euthanasia bill; testified before Michigan House and Senate Committees in support of the bill; created bill endorsement campaign and mobilized over 10,000 Michigan advocates to support the bills; successful strategy moved both bills furthest in Michigan’s history. Testified before federal and state legislative committees sheding light on issues related to animal and child protection. Engaged in direct and grassroots lobbying on child and animal welfare issues including increased penalties for animal cruelty, pets in protection orders, animal fighting, animals in research, pets caught in the financial crisis, increased child abuse funding, and healthcare for children. Sought-after trainer and author on The Link® between Animal Cruelty and Human Violence; Pets in the Foreclosure Crisis; Pets and Women’s Shelters (PAWS) Program; Therapy Animal Supporting Kids (TASK) Program. Assigned to felony cases for most of my career, including the first racketeering case under Michigan's law. Oversaw and handled all cases from the Michigan State University 1999 Riot, including establishing a riot restitution fund for all individuals convicted to help repay the damage caused to the City of East Lansing. Handled numerous child abuse cases, including cases in Family Court. A trainer for the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan.
