    At the geographical center of Pleasant Bay, one of Cape Cod’s most scenic and ecologically important embayments, Sipson Island hosts 24 acres of sandy beach, coastal banks, saltmarsh, eelgrass beds, upland meadows, and woodland. For centuries a refuge and shellfishing place for the Monomoyick people, the island was bought by English colonists in 1711. It remained in private hands, off limits to the public . . . until the Friends of Pleasant Bay spearheaded the effort to purchase the island in 2019. The island is now owned by Sipson Island Trust (SIT), a private conservation trust, created in 2019 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to own and manage the now-protected island. Its founding leaders represent diverse interests around the Pleasant Bay bioregion: conservation, science, education, business, fishing and shellfishing. We’re building an organization around strong values of community, inclusivity, and collaboration, working closely with land trusts from the surrounding towns and with conservationists Cape-wide. In its short lifespan, SIT has published a Land Management & Stewardship Plan for Sipson Island, crafted Conservation Restrictions, and conducted Natural Resource Inventories. In July 2020, SIT fulfilled our commitment to the community to open Sipson Island to the public.

Since its founding in 1985 the group has been successful in achieving State designation of the Bay as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and was instrumental in development and State approval of a Resource Management Plan for the Bay.The Mission of the Friends of Pleasant Bay is:To promote education, research and public awareness of the area as one of critical environmental concernTo preserve open space and to retain visual quality of the areaTo preserve the environmental integrity of the bay shoreTo ensure habitat protection and retention of the rich biological diversity and productivity of the bayTo retain and enhance public access to the shorelineTo preserve natural and historic sitesTo promote public awareness of historic Native American culture.The Friends encourage innovative education projects centered on the Bay through an annual competitive grant program open to all public schools in the area. The Friends also provide regular support for advanced technical studies of the Bay, and develop and publish informational documents for public education and awareness. We frequently participate in the public process on issues affecting the Bay, and raise and provide funds for purchase of critical open space land.
