The Nutrition Medical Student Scholars Program provides opportunities for medical students to explore the role and impact of nutrition on growth, development and various disease processes. A preceptor-supervised experience allows students to pursue an in-depth clinical or research focus. Participation in nutrition-related conferences, rounds and journal clubs encourages a multidisciplinary approach in research, clinical and community settings.

• Developed and disseminated a survey investigating U.S. academic health centers' perceptions of personalized medicine as well as their progress and challenges in the integration of personalized medicine into clinical practice• Assisted with various communications and policy projects, including:Updating PMC website content in public and science policyInvestigating value assessment frameworks' impact on access to personalized medicine

• Developed a presentation and abstract on the challenges facing the integration of mobile health technologies and personalized medicine therapies into clinical practice• Assisted with literature searches for various mobile health and personalized medicine projectsPresented final product to STSI faculty

• Developed mathematical models of the human insulin signaling pathway using MatLab in order to better understand the mechanism of lipid-induced insulin sensitivity due to obesity as well as investigate their dose-response to insulin treatment• Presented the final product, “Mathematical Modeling of the Insulin Pathway in Humans” under the mentorship of Michael Reed, PhD and Fred Nijhout, PhD to faculty and researchers at Duke University
