FOCUS: Characterize the atomic-level surface structure of bimetallic alloys and study how it evolves with each step for a given reaction using the Omicron Infinity SPM in UHV at cryogenic temperatures. Studying important catalytic structure-function relationships of model surfaces is essential for fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism in both theoretical and industrial applications that work towards predictive design of heterogeneous catalysts.· Perform at least 30 hours of research per week on fundamental surface science studies of model heterogeneous catalysts in UHV using the Omicron Infinity STM and SPIP leading to a collaboration with Dr. Matthew Montemore of Tulane University· Use analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve issues with instrumentation and experiments· Negotiate with vendors and make purchases for the operation, maintenance, and repair of UHV instruments and equipment· Independently develop a procedure for collecting current, voltage, and time-dependent spectroscopy data on the new Omicron Infinity STS software· Produce action spectra quantifying the kinetics and yield of vibrationally-mediated chemical transformations of single molecules by analyzing STS data· Use IT skills to design an automation in Microsoft Flow that converts files to graphs in Microsoft Excel for data analysis· Execute and modify XPS experiments at UHV and high pressure for 60 hours of at Brookhaven National Laboratory which provides information on the surface and near-surface chemistry on patented research documented clearly in a laboratory notebook

Collectively advocate for the 250 student workers in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences while specifically representing the 80 graduate student workers in the chemistry department. Bargain with Tufts University from April 2023 – December 2023 to renew the second Tufts University Graduate Workers’ Union (TUGWU) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).· Collaboratively work for 15 hours per week with union leaders from 9 other departments· Achieve 100% affirmative ratification for CBA renewal for improvements in working conditions such as a 21% pay increase with a 42% increase over the lifetime of the contract, expanded benefits including an additional year of health insurance and the start of dental coverage, and the establishment of a childcare and emergency fund· Mobilize and organize the chemistry department resulting in 100% union membership of all eligible student workers· Meet with leading administration in monthly grievance meetings to ensure Tufts University was compliant with OSHA regulations

This program selects undergraduate students for a unique leadership learning experience coupled with group mentorship from University of Connecticut alumnae.· Discuss diversity, leadership, and community in weekly talks with women who are successful in their field on to support development as a leader for women in STEM for a total of 28 hours

FOCUS: Lead collaboration between the Quardokus Group and Pinkhassik Group to investigate the physical properties of novel vesicle-templated polymer nanocapsules using non-contact AFM in collaboration· Synthesize and characterize vesicle-templated polymer nanocapsules via scanning electron microscope imaging· Use DLS to study the change in the kinetics of polymerization with the type of activating light source· Deposit nanocapsules on silicon using incubation sample deposition techniques for study with AFM

FOCUS: Develop an open-access interactive program that simulates 2D atomic hexagonal packing, including defect sites, domains, and domain boundaries of atoms for future use in secondary education curriculum· Construct a ball-bearing apparatus that mimics changes in atomic packing with the introduction of kinetic energy· Begin development of a MATLAB machine-learning program which processes images of the ball bearings to make predictions of kinetic movements

Work directly with preschool children in yearlong mentoring relationships to promote children’s school success.
