Assistants completed a variety of tasks including caring for the greenhouse, data mining, obtaining samples, running tests, general cleaning, and processing samples.Additionally collaborated with Agricultural Engineering to learn about and assist with the development of a machine learning model to detect coconut rhinoceros beetles in traps around the state of Hawaii.

Xiang Gao and Qunfeng Dong at Loyola University Chicago to develop a bioinformatics strategy for a NIH-funded project titled “A Microbial Model for the Formation of Calcium Oxalate and Calcium Phosphate Stones.” Certain bacteria are associated with kidney stones in human patients, which leads to an intriguing scientific hypothesis that those bacteria may contribute to the formation of kidney stones, for example, by acting as adhesion factors to facilitate urinary calcium-based crystal aggregation. In this project, we aim at investigating whether those stone-associated bacteria possess any unique genomic features compared to non-stone-associated bacteria. Shotgun genome sequences have already been produced from those stone-associated bacteria.Trainees will learn to perform genome assembly, genome annotation, and genome comparison to identify bacterial genes and their corresponding metabolic pathways that are statistically significantly enriched in stone-associated bacteria.
