About Allison Hartley
Hi there! I'm a junior at UC Berkeley majoring in Bioengineering and minoring in Electrical Engineering & CS (EECS) and Journalism. I fell in love with the challenge and complexity of research when I started synthesizing iron-oxide nanoparticle imaging tracers in Jan. 2022 at Berkeley Imaging Systems Laboratory. Last summer, I learned about cancer biology and therapy from some of the best cancer and molecular imaging scientists and physicians at Memorial Sloan Cancer Center in NYC. This summer ('24), I'll be a systems integration engineer in the surgical robotics space at Johnson & Johnson Medtech.I’ve taken initiative on all sides of the research process: designing experiments, testing particles, and analyzing Magnetic Relaxometry results in MATLAB to characterize the nanoparticles’ physics and magnetic properties. I’ve been flexible and persistent: I learned new characterization techniques like Transmission Electron Microscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, and IR Spectroscopy; independently researched solvent properties for new procedures; and presented my progress in weekly group meetings. Leveraging my extensive experience editing articles for my high school newspaper and 300 college application essays, I give technical, structural, and stylistic feedback on lab group SBIR and NIH grant proposals, PhD dissertations, and fellowships.My experience as a writer and journalist makes me a better engineer, and my scientific background makes me a better writer. I’m inspired by narrative-driven journalism and completed a Journalism minor to hone my written communication, information gathering, and storytelling skills. I’m currently writing a story on the future of energy according to a particular nuclear physicist in a course at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.I'm eager to learn, gain experience in biotech, and chat about your work.
