    My thesis project focuses on elucidating the genetic mechanisms of neural crest cells in craniofacial development. Presently, we understand that Foxd3, a transcription factor from the Fox family, is influential in neural crest migration. Specifically, when Foxd3 is nonfunctional, craniofacial development is affected-leading to a variety of medical conditions. However, there is an existing gap in understanding what additional factors are involved in the genetic regulatory network downstream of Foxd3. In my research, I use zebrafish as an animal model to investigate potential effector genes of zebrafish foxd3.

    In pursuit of my graduate education, I joined the Bioscience Program at the University of Utah. The first year included coursework related to Molecular Biology as well as research rotations. All three of my rotations were in labs that use zebrafish as their model organism. I selected these 3 rotations because of my existing interest in using zebrafish to study developmental biology, which was established during my undergraduate career. Ultimately, I joined Rodney Stewart's laboratory in August of 2020 and began working on my research project. During the first year, I also completed an experimental design course introducing me to the concept of grant proposals and oral defenses of a research project.
