About Allison Pennell

My professional goal now and in the future is to help adults improve their education and have a positive impact in their lives. I consider changing careers from journalism to education one of my biggest achievements. An important part of this transition was earning the respect of my peers at Forsyth Technical Community College. Teachers often said they could tell which students had taken my class because those students had a better foundation than others. In the middle of this, I also managed caring for both my parents the last few years of their lives. I managed, hired, and scheduled 5-10 caregivers, and handled all finances, etc. - all while working full-time. MY TEACHING APPROACH: Respect, Encouragement, Engaged LearningInstructor/student relationship: I believe respect is especially important. They need someone who can build them up by showing them they ARE capable. Active Learning: Jean Piaget, among other educational theorists, believed that students often remember information and transfer it more effectively when they construct it themselves. I have always believed this, too, and am mindful of this in every lesson I plan – and make it fun!EX: At the college level, I often used newspapers and/or magazines for various applied learning exercises. I also turned the content matter into some type of interactive game.TEACHING PEERS SAY: I care.I sincerely care about my students and want to see them find their worth and realize that they can achieve their goals. From teaching evaluations: “Lessons meet the diverse needs of the learners in the classroom”; “her voice was enthusiastic and inspiring… uses knowledge of effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and interaction in the classroom; thoughtful and creative lessons are consistently planned and presented”Early Career – Related Experience:4 years in public school classroom6 years as a journalist+ experience in career preparation program for K-14 students

Allison Pennell Work Experience Details
  • Belk
    Retail Sales Associate
    Belk Jun 2009 - Present
    Winston-Salem; Hickory
I took this job while also teaching at Forsyth Technical College, at first PT then FT (see below) and caring for my aging parents. It provided both the schedule flexibility and income I needed. While not related directly to my true vocation, teaching, I did do a lot of things that have value and application to an education classroom and environment.KEY SKILLS used here that are applicable to teaching:--Training new employees: I trained more than 10 new staff members ‘the ropes’, including customer service, the sales register & software, how to juggle the job requirements/tasks efficiently and much more – all while modeling these skills every day.--Supervising team of 12 as Team Lead, and serving as manager when needed--Organization and multi-tasking is necessary to maintain any sense of order at any work station, especially with all the post-covid staffing shortages creating a lot of DISorganization overall. --Communication ties into everything, and is incredibly important. First, building a rapport with customers is good customer service (everyone likes to be heard.) If they have questions or confusion about anything, I feel the teacher in me come out. I go into “educate” mode, breaking things down in the simplest way possible, and they are always appreciative. --Maintaining my composure in difficult situations is a must, being able to problem solve when something unexpected happens, or handling a customer who is confrontational. Customers often comment on how well I handle myself. One even offered me a job at a bank.ACCOLADES: Worked in commission only, sought after department that management only assigned to specific, key employees. Here I earned a rare “Consultant” title, meaning Top 5% of sales in that location. Earned bonuses in another department by leading the team of 12 associates to meet our sales goals.
  • Forsyth Technical Community College
Developmental Reading And English Adjunct Instructor
Forsyth Technical Community College Aug 2006 - May 2018
    Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States
Classes: Developmental Reading & English (had been: Basic Language Skills, Writing Foundations, Writing Fundamentals, Essential Reading Skills, Introduction to College Reading, Improved College Reading) - Grammar, writing and reading comprehension- Differentiated instruction; assessments; rubrics; supplemental materials; standard curriculum and creating additional activities / lessons; Blackboard Examples of how I teach: I use outside resources to add interest. Students get bored easily if EVERYTHING comes from the book. I had students tell me years later that they had used handouts I’d created through the rest of the college English classes with other instructors.I found a fun interactive grammar website that livened things up. I shared this with my peers who used it, too.I also created a Jeopardy-styled game and used it to review content.Students: traditional / non-traditional and diverse students (ages 18-60 & class size 15-20) who needed additional instruction to prepare for college level classes.Student Feedback: “A teacher who has a heart for teaching” “I learned a lot because of the way she broke things down” “You teach. Other teachers just “cover the material”” “I thought it was going to be boring, but (she) surprised me with her teaching style. I found myself enjoying it … She is smart, funny, and down to earth.” “I’ve never had a teacher sit down with me to help and show me what I was doing wrong.” What I learned: I interviewed for a FT position here, though wasn’t chosen. Later, I learned that the chair-person and lead instructor of my department both went to the Dean independently to ask for a 2nd full-time position be created to hire me, too. The committee had selected a candidate who had 25+ years experience.I also learned: that I really loved teaching reading/writing basics to adults. I’m naturally skilled at breaking down these fundamentals in a way that most can understand.
