Though surprising to some, only a small proportion of my current job as an English Teacher actually involves direct teaching. Every day still requires me to engage small and large groups through spoken communication, multimedia presentations, and custom designed activities; however, the work I do behind the scenes might surprise anyone unfamiliar to the new landscape of secondary education. More often, I'm analyzing data, maintaining and responding to progress reporting, using design software and online platforms for communication and remediation, editing academic and application essays, writing curriculum, solving unique parent and student concerns, and much more. The pandemic has also put me in a unique position to work with remote and in-person individuals simultaneously, using technology and interpersonal skills to keep both groups engaged. Outside of my core courses, I've also been the advisor for the school's audio/visual broadcasting journalism team. This involved the production of weekly outreach videos showcasing student work, but often required professional district communication videos that only I could plan, shoot, edit, and distribute. I also act as an event manager as the local Poetry Out Loud coordinator. This entails partnering with the national POL organization to help young poets compete and earn scholarships. Outside of my primary job, I manage my own local music career. This requires regular communication with clients to hone and meet their expectations for private and public events. I have also been able to use my performances for local charity events and fundraising. The scheduling and logistics of this job require the same communicative and organizational skills that I use in my full-time career. I'm expanding my horizons beyond secondary education, but my understanding of the learning process makes me - and anyone I work with - a quick learner.
