About Allison Black Cornelius

Allison Black Cornelius is a frequent keynote speaker at national conferences and guest lectures at some of America’s most prestigious colleges and universities. Allison is currently serving as the CEO of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS). Under her leadership and with the help of more than 75 staff and thousands of volunteers, the organization has grown exponentially. In just five years GBHS has expanded from one location to three; increased the number of animals served from 7,500 to more than 20,000 annually; started a satellite teaching externship for Auburn University and Tuskegee University Vet Schools; and added animal control and impoundment contracts for Jefferson County and 19 cities. GBHS operates the largest free spay/neuter clinic in Alabama which also supports the largest feline TNR/RTF program in the state. The Adoption, Education and Transport Center adopts and transports more than 9,000 animals annually and provides disaster response throughout the southeast. Plans are now underway to build a new campus that will include a world-class shelter hospital, impoundment facility, and animal care and adoption center. Allison has received numerous awards and recognition for her work in the nonprofit sector including appearances on Oprah Winfrey, Phil Donahue, Nancy Grace, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, NPR, the TBN Network, and Larry King, and interviews with Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the New York Times. Allison is also well known as the founder of Blackfish Strategies, formerly Blackboard. The firm was nationally recognized for consulting with nonprofit organizations, executive coaching, and executive education on leadership. She has facilitated strategic plans and board retreats for thousands of nonprofit organizations diverse in size and scope, successfully completed more than 200 nonprofit collaborations and turn-arounds, and assisted the policy offices of twenty-six U.S. Governors. She assisted with the writing, organization, and passage of Megan's Law in thirty-six states, Alabama's Constitutional Amendment for Victim's Rights, and the Alabama Department of Children’s Affairs. She helped establish the Offices of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives for 26 US Governors, and helped organize CASA programs in three states. Allison and her husband Jeff now live in Alabama with their four rescue dogs. They have five children: Lauren, Robin, Anne Campbell, Ross, and Roman, and two grandchildren. Allison is an avid golfer and self-confessed nonprofit junkie who loves teaching, animals, fishing, hiking, swimming, and the arts.
