Asking questions of ourselves and the world around us can be transformational.I began working as a scientist in a pharmaceutical company when I was in high school. For the next 10 years I contributed to the field of neuroscience through research into neuronal circuits, muscular dystrophy, and spinal cord regeneration. Most of the projects I worked on have been or are being developed into therapies. In 2013 I founded My Green Lab, a non-profit organization with a mission to create a culture of sustainability in science. My Green Lab was founded on the philosophy of questioning our own behavior. The organization works with scientists, manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and others to identify the habits, routines, and protocols that we follow without thinking. In becoming aware of our habits, we open up the possibility to do something new. My Green Lab's approach to questioning our behavior was so powerful that the organization sparked a global movement to reduce the environmental impact of scientific research. The work has inspired thousands of people to see themselves, their relationship to each other, and their relationship to the planet in a new way. Under my leadership, My Green Lab established the first-ever sustainability criteria for laboratory operations and products (Green Lab Certification, Energy Star standards for lab products and ACT), transforming an industry half the size of the automotive industry into a paragon of sustainability. Every program we developed while I was CEO was rooted in questioning our behavior and striving to act authentically and intentionally rather than out of habit or routine.This approach continues to be the guiding philosophy behind my most recent project, The Epicenter.The Epicenter facilitates an experience of empowerment through one- and two-week sessions guided by world-class instructors in a beautiful, natural setting. This experience is nourished throughout the year by connecting students with a community of empowered individuals, sharing resources, and offering additional guidance. The Epicenter creates an open space (both physical and virtual), free of judgement and full of trust, where students are able to connect with their authentic selves and realize their potential.We envision a world in which children (and adults) experience what it means to be limitless, outgrowing themselves every day, living up to their potential, and living in full awareness of the impact they have on themselves, each other, and the planet.
