Senior Program Manager
One foot in the program management office (PMO) and one foot in the product quality office (PQO), I worked to see that the products we developed were of high quality and shipped on time. I was responsible for several components of the Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite, which was developed in a globally distributed group. The group worked in a variety of agile and waterfall development styles, using Jira and Confluence for the agile work and traditional Oracle project management utilities for the waterfall projects. During this period I became a certified scrum master.
Principal Product Manager (Messaging)
Product Manager for Oracle's Messaging Server product (formerly Sun Java System Messaging Server). Responsible for the entire product life cycle of the standards-based (SMTP/MIME, POP, IMAP) messaging server product line. The messaging server included a C-based MTA and message store, a Java management console, a Javascript-based web client, and an LDAP directory back end. As product manager I had all the duties described under the role at Sun. I also ensured that the product met all Oracle release requirements, including validation of third party software libraries, development and maintenance of license terms, and management of localization and accessibility requirements.
Communications Software Product Manager
Returned to Sun to resume my previous role as product manager for the messaging server product. Full description of the role below.
Software Manager
Software development management for embedded systems providing highly accurate timing and frequency information for the telecommunications and military sectors.
Vp, Development
Responsible for turning a videoconferencing application developed in an academic environment into a commercially viable product. Recruited the software development team and acted as liaison between them and the technology group at Cal Tech. Built the company infrastructure, including the office network and e-mail system.
Product Manager, Sun One Messaging Server
Responsible for the entire product life cycle of the standards-based (SMTP/MIME, POP, IMAP) messaging server product line, which generates approximately $60M in annual revenue. The messaging server includes a C-based MTA and message store, a Java management console, a Javascript-based web client, and an LDAP directory back end. As product manager I investigated nascent technologies, defined product requirements, managed engineering schedules, planned internal and external product training, defined localization schedules, assisted field sales teams with customer presentations and visits, assisted the marketing team with collateral and events, evaluated competitive products, formulated pricing models, established and maintained partner relationships, and interacted consistently with other Sun teams to ensure proper interoperability of numerous products and platforms.
Manager, Support And Services
Built the post-sale technical support and on-site consulting department from the ground up. This group, which consisted of nine people at the time Innosoft was acquired by Sun Microsystems, was responsible for providing technical support to messaging and directory customers via telephone and e-mail and for supplying on-site consulting services. Instituted a 24x7 support system for high-end customers. Implemented a consulting service business that, although not envisioned as a profit center, generated nearly $1 million in revenue in just over two years. Duties included staffing consultant and support engineer positions and training new hires as well as frequently acting as an on-site consultant doing installation and configuration work, training, and presenting seminars.
