My life has been a little backwards – I raised my kids first, then took advantage of the time I had while they were in school to further my own education. My dad suggested accounting because I was “good with numbers.” I quickly learned that accounting has much more to do with concepts than numbers; nevertheless, I fell in love with it after my first accounting class at Louisiana State University in Shreveport (LSUS) where I earned my BS Accounting degree. I’m now pursuing a MS Accounting degree at The University of Texas at Dallas, focusing on internal audit. I plan to sit for the CIA exam in May 2018 and the CPA exam in 2019. At LSUS, I served as VP of the Association of Student Accountants where I organized a fundraiser for the LSUS Health Center Children’s Floor, raising $1,000. In my Capstone course, my team competed for top shareholder value in a business model simulation, researching the market and developing strategies to become an industry leader; consequently, our team earned 1st place out of 9 teams. In addition, I was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi honors societies and was named the LSUS Outstanding Accounting Student of the Year for 2017.I’ve been described as an effective leader as well as a great team player. I enjoy taking charge, organizing tasks and energizing others to accomplish goals, as well as making valuable contributions to team projects. I appreciate creativity, organization, and taking initiative, and I love playing the piano, creating new recipes in the kitchen, and giving back to the community.I often hear, “you don’t seem like the type of person that would be an accountant.” The perception is that accounting translates to boring. Ok...it can be! However, internal audit appeals to me because it enables me to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve developed to help others accomplish their goals - which means I get to express the values I hold through the work I do, and that is definitely not boring – it’s exciting!
