As a first generation college graduate, I really struggled to find a way to put myself through school while remaining independent. With careful planning and some bumps along the way, I finally received my BA in Anthropology this last June. Throughout the entire process I have been fortunate enough to be able to work at jobs that not only supported me and my dreams, but that taught me a lot as well. All of my experiences, both in the classroom and within the jobs themselves have culminated in a desire to find a career that gives me the opportunity to make a positive impact on the community. At the Seattle Arthritis Clinic, I got to know the in's and out's of the medical system here in Washington. I worked with a variety of different individuals and was able to pick up a little bit of knowledge regarding most areas in the office. My time at North Seattle Community College was split between classes and working two jobs. These were a Work Study position in the Advising Office and as the Project Manager of the Student Administrative Council. I learned a lot about multi-tasking and leadership in these positions. I oversaw 9 individuals as a PM and had to learn how to lead effectively with various personalities. Overall my time at NSCC was wonderful and full of new experiences and learning opportunities. My most recent job has been with a young boy who I have had the privilege to nanny part time around classes at UW. He has really taught me how to think on my feet, think outside the box and the always keep a sense of humor. I initially planned to work toward degree in Environmental Studies. Because of this, a lot of my pre-requisite work was in science classes. Once I transferred to Anthropology my time was more focused on those Anthropology courses such as Islamic Studies, Money and Healthcare and the Evolution of Sex and Gender. I learned a lot about different groups within society both in the US and abroad.
