About Allison Jones

My mom loves to tell this story about me: When I was eight, I asked her if cartoons were real. She told me they weren't and I stopped watching cartoons, preferring to focus on reading, writing, and telling my own stories.Though she admired my inquisitive mind, she thinks she took something from my childhood---the joy of watching cartoons and getting excited like other kids.I think she set me on a path that I am still following: finding, creating, and sharing stories that inform and inspire. And for the past 15 years I've been lucky enough to do this for innovative mission-driven organizations. Whether launching a digital publication and social strategy, writing speeches for executives, strengthening relationships with reporters, or building a communications team from the ground up, I love helping organizations strengthen their brands, communities, and influence through smart strategies and systems that center stories and analysis. And as a senior leader, I'm able to take this expertise beyond my department, leveraging storytelling and communications for impactful work across the organization in areas such as strategic planning, team management, priority setting, and more.(But, in case you're wondering, I've fallen back in love with cartoons. Bob's Burgers, anyone?).Get in touch (ajlovesya@gmail.com) if you want to work together or talk about building world-class communications teams, narrative and storytelling, branding, and leveraging creativity to change the world.

  • Code2040
Senior Director, Media And Movement Building
    Code2040 Jan 2019 - Jun 2019
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
In a time of great change and challenges, communications is about ushering in bold ideas and creating compelling tools that empower people to take action wherever they are. In this newly created position and department that I designed, my goal was to change the narrative and actions taken around racial equity in tech by leveraging storytelling, media, content, and campaigns. I relaunched a publication all about equity in tech, led an overhaul of our messaging and branding, and stewarded a campaign to introduce our bold new vision to the world.Further, as a senior leader in the organization reporting directly to the CEO I brought my ability to make meaning and synthesize complex information to executive projects such as strategic planning, budgeting, and team development. More specifically: I wrote and branded our strategic plan, synthesizing internal and external changes and crafting a new mission and vision statement; I co-led our goal setting process, implementing new approaches such as organizational priorities, functional teams and OKRs; and I developed an approach to department budgeting that leads with vision and impact and categorizes expenses/needs in a more holistic way.

Code2040 is a community of Black and Latinx technologists and their allies who are diversifying tech to create a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous economy. Our goal is to ensure that by 2040---the beginning of the decade when the US will be majority people of color---Black and Latinx people are fully represented in and leading the innovation economy, and have the economic and social capital needed to thrive and build generational wealth. In a time when many people want to keep their heads down, my job as Director of Marketing and Communications is to inspire them to stand up. I do this by leveraging story-driven, data-rich content and campaigns to paint a vibrant, equitable future that can only come to fruition if we take collective responsibility towards creating it.As the first hire in this role at this fast-growing nonprofit startup, my work thus far has been largely foundational. I follow Ken Carbone's branding approach when it comes to my marketing strategy: Unify, Simplify, Amplify. -"Unify" is my biggest focus, as I have established the key messaging, new branding direction, and foundational assets required to have a unified voice and appearance. -"Simplify" has required me to focus on how I create the processes and structures necessary for us to execute. This includes a highly-successful internal resource center for teams to find marketing assets and guidelines. -"Amplify" is the fun stuff of marketing: social media (we doubled our reach in less than three months), content/editorial strategy (check out our student-driven publication), media features (did you read our features in Fast Company and Fortune?), and speaking opportunities (we've been on stage at the Commonwealth Club, GE Mind and Machines, and TechCrunch Sessions, just to name a few). And I'm just getting started.Since I'm new to the area and new to this side of tech I am always up for coffee and conversation. Want to chat or collaborate? Email me: allison@code2040.org.
  • Nten: The Nonprofit Technology Network
    Marketing And Publications Director
Nten: The Nonprofit Technology Network Nov 2015 - Jul 2016
    Portland, Oregon, Us
From accidental techies to tech champions, NTEN: The Nonprofit Technology Network helps over 70,000 nonprofit professionals of all stripes use technology to create change.During my time as Marketing and Publications Director, the name of the game was, "process." As our community and organization grew, I developed, refined, and managed marketing processes to ensure we produced great content and campaigns. I had my hands in the world of marketing, from a mobile app and social media to a program guide and reports. Highlights include:*Strengthened thought leadership and visibility with one-of-a-kind reports and case studies: Collaborating with innovators like Microsoft and Care 2, I managed the production of three industry-leading reports and one case study on tech tools and trends in the nonprofit sector. (Fast fact: Did you know that last year, nonprofits raised $44 for every 1,000 emails they sent?!)*Increased reach and engagement with an updated social and editorial strategy: I introduced new tools, selected topics, clarified key metrics, established a process for reviewing progress, and set up a calendar to ensure we were consistent in what we shared and how we shared. (Soap box: Consistency is underrated. We saw a 400% increase in Facebook reach just by keeping a targeted schedule.)*Developed marketing collateral on-time, on-brand, and on-budget for signature technology conference: Program guide, mobile app, Facebook ads, social media badges, swag, email campaigns...you name it, I developed it for the Nonprofit Technology Conference, the only conference that brings together over 2,000 professionals from across the country to talk about how tech can be used for social change.
