Suncoast Chess Camp has had many success stories. Kids love the small group learning environment and can see marked improvement in their chess abilities. They get to meet new friends, play in camp tournaments, engage in Blitz Tactics, and their favorite activity- BugHouse!Our SunCoast Camp "graduates" have won many chess prizes. Over the past three years, five of our campers won first place in K-12 Scholastic Tournaments in St. Petersburg and Tampa. Another four have won first or second in K-12, while countless others have won first prizes in K-8, K-5 and K-2 tournament sections.Not only is chess is a great game, playing chess teaches all kinds of academic and life skills, as well as Critical Thinking. In response to a question on how chess has helped in business and life: Chess has taught me many things. As a youngster I gained confidence in my ability to make decisions and think for myself. It also boosted my organizational and academic skills and improved my reasoning abilities. As an adult chess has made me realize the importance of preparation, study, research, and practice in order to maintain ones skills and continue to improve in any endeavor. (In this regard I recommend Josh Waitzkin's book- The Art of Learning.) Finally, chess has taught me self-reliance, patience, good sportsmanship, and persistence.
