Alma currently serves as Applied Research Manager in Arcadis' Resilience global business area (GBA). Within the Resilience GBA, she focuses on utility management and water optimization, assisting with: utility lead and copper initiatives, assessments of water system compliance with applicable federal and state drinking water regulations, PFAS compliance & watershed monitoring, data analysis and visualization/presentation, CIP budget tracking and project prioritization, and asset management/ condition assessment reporting. She also supports the Arcadis digital solutions team to deliver customized cloud-based project management information systems to clients. Alma’s research focused on using and developing methods to better understand various micropollutants in water including Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), regulated and unregulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and leachates from nanofiltration membranes. As an EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR), American Water Works Association (AWWA), and AMTA/USBR graduate fellow, Alma’s research applied various analytical (ie. Solid Phase Extraction, Liquid-Liquid Extraction, Derivatization) and instrumental (ie. Gas Chromatography (GC)- Election Capture Detection, GC-Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography (LC)-Ultraviolet detection, and LC-Mass Spectrometry) techniques for the detection and analysis of known and novel micropollutants. Alma serves as subject matter expert supporting Water Research Foundation Tailored Collaboration (WRF 5155) titled, “Developing Strategic Consumer Messaging for Microplastics in Drinking Water Supplies" and WRF 5185 (titled, "Fate of Microplastics in Drinking Water"). She has presented research findings at various state and national conferences including AWWA ACE, AMTA MTC, and AWWA WQTC. Alma has completed the 2020 Water Environment Federation Water Leadership Institute which focused on the examination of complex challenges facing the water and wastewater industries and harnessing skills to affect change within organizations. She is interested in experimental/research design, pilot testing new technologies for drinking water systems, analysis of environmental samples, analytical method development, compliance assessments, exploring new tools for data analysis/visualization, and identifying opportunities for cross-collaboration and project synergies—the goal being to better understand drinking water supplies, improve their resilience, and safeguard the well-being of communities.
