As a Fish and Wildlife Technician on the California Recreational Fisheries Survey (CRFS), I assist in the hiring, training and managing of Scientific Aids. Field data collection within in several modes of the marine sport fishery including: beaches and banks, man-made structures, dockside private and charter boats, and on board Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessels. I conduct office training, field training, and evaluate staff performance. I complete field site visits with staff to confirm project goals are being met and may also identify areas where additional staff training and/or sampling changes may be needed. My office duties include tracking sample data to ensure sampling rates are met, summarizing and compiling weekly data reports highlighting regional finfish effort and catch. Certain reports are utilized for in-season tracking of certain species of concern, project administration, and tracking data. A large component of my position involves data editing, reviewing, and giving feedback to staff. Another includes reviewing the previous month’s data prior to estimates to check for outliers and errors. I also upload data into the CRFS data portal and assist with its maintenance. Often upon request from other project senior staff or supervisors I conduct spot analyses of data and data QA/QC tasks.

I worked with support staff for the chemistry and biology laboratories at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). I aided with preparation and organization of laboratory experiments and activities. To ensure a safe environment was kept I was tasked with clean up, proper disposal, and inventory of any reagents or equipment used. I accomplished this by applying both my employee training and knowledge gained throughout my studies at the CSUMB laboratories: sterile technique, proper chemical spill containment or cleanup, referencing material safety data sheet.
