Alonso Ramírez Cover is a professor of Development Studies, Environmental Politics and Global Political Economy at the School of Political Science and the Center for Political Studies of the University of Costa Rica. He has also worked as a researcher for the Institute of Social Research at this University, and coordinated this institute's Research Program on New Forms of Capital Accumulation, Distribution and Inequality. He has extensive research experience on environmental conservation policy, natural resource management governance, international political economy and institutional change in Central America.His current research centers on changes in governance of development-conservation interventions and their relation to green neoliberalism and capitalism. More specifically, he has researched the political economies of international tourism, PES and organic agriculture in the context of various forms of conservation governance in Costa Rica and Panama; yet his overall interests are widely focused on other Central American nations as well. He has also worked as a think tank consultant on other pressing issues for this region such as external trade policy, institutional change and democratic transition. His research makes use of eclectic methodologies combining the development of complex databases, case studies and discourse analysis. Alonso Ramírez received his BA on Political Science at the University of Costa Rica and his MA in Development Studies with emphasis in Development Research at ISS in late 2011. In 2017, he received his PhD in Development Studies, with emphasis in Agrarian and Environmental Studies.His research interests include: sustainable development, environmental governance, environmental conservation, natural resource management, geopolitics of nature and tourism and international political economy.
