Ai Senior Software ArchitectCs Disco Mar 2019 - Apr 2021Worked for the AI lab, a machine learning research group within CS DISCO.Worked with machine learning NNs (CNNs, BERT, multi-modal models, etc.) as well as other datascience tools (LSH, PCA, K-means, etc.) across the CS DISCO data universe. Code language withinthe lab was Python.On a day to day basis, supported the efforts of data scientists running a large variety of experiments.My overarching goal was to accelerate the work the lab did, including: • reduce time to results • access to data • leverage scalable and distributed infrastructure • make it easier to run experiments • help with selecting the right hardware architecture (i.e. GPU, ASICs and instance types) • looked into possible impact that the lab work had on production systems • helped improve performance of our algorithms and data pipelinesMy first project for the lab was working with one of the data scientists to be able to fully leverage multi-GPU systems for optimal performance. Our work showed where the bottlenecks were , in particular the data transfers between the GPU and the CPU. We also did experiments on batch sizes to find the sweet spot. With the new settings and with the new code, we were able to save 20% of our ML costs in production (thousands of models with hundreds of trainings per day).Created an experiment execution framework on top of AWS batch to schedule workloads from a fewjobs to several thousand jobs per experiment. It was able to leverage spot instances as well as selectspecific instances based on what the data scientist needed. Experiments run on hardware from singleinstances to clusters of 100+ GPU instances.
