It is the largest hydroelectric power generation initiative in nearly 40 years in Northern Ontario. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) selected Kiewit-Alarie, a Partnership (KAP) to administer the design-build project on the Mattagami River. This project retired the old 52-megawatt (MW) Smoky Falls Generating Station and constructed a new 271-MW station immediately adjacent to the existing plant. In addition, a new generating unit was added to three other power generating stations along the Mattagami River: Little Long, Kipling and Harmon. In total, OPG aims to increase Ontario’s energy generation capacity by over 440 MW, enough electricity to power up to 440,000 additional homes. The project required the excavation of 650,000 cubic metres of overburden and over 700,000 cubic metres of rock, as well as the placement of over 190,000 cubic metres of concrete over five years. Kearl Oil Sands - Dug/Froth

Imperial Oil’s Kearl Oil Sands project is located 70 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, in the Athabasca oil sands region. Kiewit provided all the labor, construction equipment and bulk materials to build the Froth Treatment Facility and Flare Silo for this major oil sands project, which is part of an 110,000 barrels per day oil sands mine. Kiewit provided all the labor, construction equipment and bulk materials to build the Froth Treatment Facility and Flare Silo for this major oil sands project, which is part of an 110,000 barrels per day oil sands mine. Kiewit’s module facility constructed and delivered 186 pipe rack and equipment modules to the project. Site construction included installation of piling, concrete foundations, structural steel, modules, tagged equipment, vessels, piping, electrical and instrumentation.Kiewit is currently performing work on the expansion phase, which will add 110,000 barrels per day of bitumen production. Kiewit’s module fabrication scope includes 330 (pipe rack, process, e-house and stair) modules. Large modules are 20 feet high, 20 feet wide and 80 feet long. Work includes structural steel, piping, electrical and insulation. Sitework scope includes all disciplines from the piles up (civil, structural steel, piping, E&I, insulation) and includes procurement of all bulk materials for both site and modules. Planned mechanical completion is in 2014.The project is a fly-in camp job, with more than 2.5 million craft manhours and a peak of over 2,000 staff and craft personnel. Show less

MEG CHRISTINA LAKE SAGD PHASE IIChristina Lake, AlbertaKiewit led this joint-venture EPC project in partnership with WorleyParsons Canada Ltd. to construct 22,000 BPD steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) project, including 118 modules. The project involved front-end engineering, detailed design, module fabrication, procurement, and construction.
