Alper Sönmez has been an Associate Professor at Selçuk University. He holds a PhD in Economics from the Middle East Technical University (METU). He also received his BSc. in Economics with the First-Class Honours Degree in the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences from Yıldız Technical University (YTU) in 2002. After graduation in 2002, he was accepted at the Ph.D. on BS program at METU. From 2002 to 2012, he worked as a teaching & research assistant and continued his Ph.D. Studies in the Department of Economics at METU. In 2001, he spent one year at Cornell University, the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (AEM), as a Visiting Fellow. He is the recipient of 'METU Thesis of the Year Award' for 2012 granted by Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Education and Research Foundation. In July 2013 he was awarded the third prize in the "Fourth Contest for Academic Studies" organized by the Central Bank of the Republic (CBRT) of Turkey. Also, he received "Finalist" award from Technology Development Foundation of Turkey (TTGV) Dr. T. Fikret Yücel award Programme in 2015. Since February 2013, he has been affiliated with the Department of Economics at Selcuk University, Turkey. His current research interests are foreign direct investment, economies of technology and innovation, knowledge and technology spillovers, automotive industry, MNCs, global production networks and R&D.
