About Alper Kiraz
I am the leader of a research group working on the fabrication, characterization, and understanding of advanced optofluidic and micro/nano photonic devices in order to develop novel applications in biophotonics, energy photonics, and biomedical instrumentation. Our lab was established in 2004 with a motivation to investigate optical phenomena at nano-scale. Over the years, critical expertise in areas including micro/nano/bio-photonics, optofluidics, and microfluidics has been developed in the lab. The lab’s basic toolbox includes techniques as laser spectroscopy, optical manipulation, fiber optics, laser science, single molecule microscopy/spectroscopy, soft lithography, and microfabrication. Besides these techniques, scientific instrumentation challenges are frequently overcome in the lab using different electrical, optical and mechanical design tools, and data acquisition techniques. Thanks to our kind collaborators we also have access to various other techniques in materials synthesis (e.g. aerogel preparation using extraction with supercritical CO2), molecular biology (e.g. fluorescent protein synthesis), and laser ablation. The current research projects pursued in the lab are branched to various sub-topics with focus at three main areas: Biophotonics, energy photonics, and biomedical instrumentation. A breakdown of our current research activities as well as information on our funded projects and infrastructure can be found in links below.Specialities: optics, microscopy, quantum optics, single molecule imaging, confocal microscopy, optical microcavities
Listed skills include Physics, Optics, Photonics, Spectroscopy, and 20 others.

Assoc. Prof. Of Physics
We are an experimental physics research group heavily using high resolution optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. The applications we are mainly targeting are development of novel micro-optical devices, optofluidic lab-on-a-chip devices, molecular sensors, and optofluidic-based bioenergy solutions. Major part of our efforts are directed towards experiments on:(i) Optofluidics: Study of optical microcavities formed by liquid microdroplets on a substrate or emulsified in another host liquid and study of novel optofluidics waveguides manufactured using advanced materials (e.g. silica aerogels) or advanced fabrication techniques (e.g. laser ablation).(ii) Microscopy and spectroscopy of single fluorescent molecules: Development of novel host-guest systems suitable for low temperature single molecule spectroscopy experiments. Time-correlated photon counting and biological imaging experiments with a home-built confocal microscope.(iii) Optical trapping: Optical tweezers and optical stretching of liquid microdroplets and red blood cells.(iv) Solid microdisk microcavities: Development of novel gas and biological sensors based on microdisk microcavities.General keywords for our research activities are: micro/nano-photonics, optofluidics, microfluidics, single molecule microscopy/spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, time correlated single photon counting, optical microcavities, lab-on-a-chip devices, and optical tweezing/stretching.
Asst. Prof. Of Physics
We are pursuing high resolution microscopy experiments at room temperature in order to develop new photonic devices, and characterize polymers and biological specimens. Our special emphasis is on using techniques involving fluorescence. More information on our research activities can be found at http://nano-optics.ku.edu.tr .
