About Alvan Yap
First, let's get these out of the way: I interviewed S R Nathan, was mentioned by Lee Hsien Loong in a nationwide TV telecast, and shook hands with José Ramos-Horta. I have, over the course of my editorial career, also worked with various literary, political and arts figures in Singapore. I have even, to the general astonishment of myself and those who know me as an incorrigible introvert, appeared in the mainstream media, including TV (once or thrice) as a talking head. And oh, I wrote a play "Not in my lifetime?" which was staged by leading theatre company The Finger Players. Of course, you know and I know these are far less impressive in reality than it sounds. But I've found most people do not know, and hence are always overly and unnecessarily impressed. What I'm really proud of is getting to know Ivonia, Josefina, Gasper, Denilson and all the students of Agape School for the Deaf. My one year with them, far from home, was the most meaningful of my life. I'm equally grateful to have had the chance to teach at the Singapore School for the Deaf for four unforgettable seasons of laughter (mostly my students') and tears (mostly mine). These were the toughest work I ever did - and the most fulfilling by far. Looking ahead, I wish to continue doing more in the social services, education and literary arts/publishing fields.(I seldom update on LinkedIn.
