Profile bio

About Alvaro Retana

I am a curious learner. I love tackling new and ever-changing problems and discovering how and why the pieces work and interact. In addition, human behavior and our interaction with pervasive technology fascinate me. I'm an avid podcast listener and read a few pages of new information daily.I grew up in Costa Rica. Early on, I heard of a network that would allow anyone to see the weather conditions anywhere else. Growing up in a mostly-agricultural country, I understood the economic advantage this information could represent. While I didn't have a fully developed concept of a network or its power, I knew I wanted to be part of its development. A few years later, I set up the first commercial Internet access service in Costa Rica, and the impact on businesses and individuals was immediate and significant throughout the country.I have developed, led, and worked with cross-cultural teams. I have tackled complex problems and guided technology innovation. As a speaker at multiple industry events, I have traveled the world and shared what I know in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. I am known as a leader with a strong vision and a practical and disciplined approach to executing technical innovation. I have developed long-lasting relationships and have become a trusted thought partner to many of my peers.Currently, I help Futurewei define the strategy to turn networking research into deployed technology as part of the Future Networks group. In addition, I serve as Routing Area Director in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), where I am responsible for facilitating the operation of the Internet routing system and leading 24 working groups. As a member of the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG), I am responsible for the day-to-day operation of the IETF for the final approval of all technical standards that make the Internet work better.

Listed skills include Routing, Network Architecture, Ospf, Bgp, and 41 others.
