ALVIN ENG is a native NYC playwright, memoirist, performer, acoustic punk rock raconteur and educator. His plays and performances have been seen Off-Broadway, throughout the U.S., as well as in Paris, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China. His memoir, "OUR LAUNDRY, OUR TOWN: My Chinese American Life from Flushing to the Downtown Stage and Beyond," was published in hard cover by Fordham University Press in May 2022 with a paperback release slated for October, 2023. "Our Laundry, Our Town" was covered by The New York Times, NPR/WNYC’s All of It with Alison Stewart and The Brian Lehrer Show, NY1 and CUNY-TV, among many others. The memoir chronicles growing up in a Chinese Hand Laundry in what was then one of the few immigrant Asian families in the Flushing, Queens, neighborhood of that singular universe that was NYC in the 1970s. After finding his personal and artistic voice through Asian American arts, activism, punk rock and theatre, Eng went on to play in punk bands as well as to become a playwright, author and performer. The memoir culminates in Hong Kong and China. There, Eng was invited by the U.S. Consulate, Guangzhou, to perform his solo performance work, "The Last Emperor of Flushing," in English, in his family’s ancestral Guangdong province. That performance was an extension of a Fulbright Specialist Devised Theatre/Oral History Residency that Eng co-conceived and directed with his wife, director/dramaturg Wendy Wasdahl, at City University of Hong Kong. In this devised theatre/oral history project, students wrote and performed English language plays in response to Thornton Wilder’s classic Americana play, “Our Town.” As Wilder spent part of his childhood in China, when his father was U.S. Consul General to Hong Kong and Shanghai, "Our Town" has many Chinese influences. The book has also been acquired for the collections of The New York Public Library and numerous public and academic libraries. Our Laundry, Our Town is also being taught in Asian American and Urban Studies courses at the City University of New York and other colleges and universities.THREE TREES, the first of Eng’s Portrait Plays series, was recently published by Obie Award-winning playwright Caridad Svich’s No Passport Press in 2021. This series examines the parallels between portraiture, history and power as manifested in the convergence of different disciplines, eras and cultures. Three Trees dramatizes the haunting relationship between renowned 20th century sculptor Alberto Giacometti and his primary muse/model of the 1950s, Japanese philosopher, Isaku Yanaihara. www.alvineng.com

2024-25 Long Term Fellowship (Researching A Companion Book To My Memoir)The New York Public Library - Sep 2024 - PresentNew York CityAs a 2024-25 NYPL Long-Term Fellow, I will be researching and developing a companion piece to my memoir! Here is their announcement:The Gregorian Center at The New York Public Library is pleased to announce that Alvin Eng has been selected to receive an NYPL Long-Term Fellowship. Eng is a native New York City author, playwright, educator, and acoustic punk raconteur. His memoir "Our Laundry, Our Town: My Chinese American Life from Flushing to the Downtown Stage and Beyond" was published by Fordham University Press. During his fellowship, Eng will research a memoir/NYC Asian American historical non-fiction book, tentatively titled "Urban Oracle Bones," which will adapt and expand one of his stage works, "Here Comes Johnny Yen Again." "Urban Oracle Bones" will examine the profound impact of The Opium Wars and opium on the Chinese diaspora in New York City as well as on the “heroin chic” punk rock counterculture that was so prevalent during Eng’s teenage years in 1970s NYC. This examination will be undertaken through the dual prisms of William S. Burroughs’ character Johnny Yen (immortalized in the Iggy Pop & David Bowie song “Lust For Life") and Eng’s own grandfather’s opium overdose in NYC’s Chinatown in the early 20th Century. As the book’s principle characters bookend the Bowery––Eng’s grandfather in Chinatown and Burroughs in punk rock’s ground zero, the East Village––The Bowery’s history will also be researched to create a metaphoric/geographic bridge between eras, cultures and subcultures.

Fulbright Specialist Artist-In-Residence, City University Of Hong KongFulbright Specialist Scholar, U.S. Studies/Theatre Jun 2011 - Aug 2011City University Of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong“OUR TOWN: HK/USA”In collaboration with my wife, director/actress Wendy Wasdahl, I conceived and directed this devised theatre program. "CityU" students studied Thornton Wilder’s seminal Americana play, “Our Town,” then wrote and performed their own English language plays. The plays’ themes were based on interviews the students conducted with family, friends and CityU faculty. The students then structured the plays in response to “Our Town,” which was influenced, in part, by Chinese culture and theatre. Wilder spent part of his childhood in Hong Kong and Shanghai, where his father was U.S. Counsel General in the 1910s. The minimalist presentation style of Peking opera strongly influenced the structure and sensibility of “Our Town.” The students’ final project, “Hong Kong Time Capsule 2011,” was an “off-book” full production of original English language plays written by the CityU students. The course and production were both highly regarded by the CityU students, faculty and community. There are plans to a conduct a second residency.
