Wenjie was assigned to me as a teaching assistant/research assistant while I conducted research. My research with Wenjie dealt with the synthesis of gold/silver/alloy nanoparticles. A gold nanoparticle core was first synthesized; using a reducing agent, silver was reduced and added to the gold core forming either a silver shell or an alloy depending on the temperature the reaction took place. At first, proper alloy formation was not occurring using a certain reducing agent. Wenjie solved the problem by choosing a stronger reducing agent and increasing the temperature of the synthesis. Even the principal investigator of the research group was impressed with her problem solving skills. She had excellent time management skills and created a comprehensive experiment schedule and investigated a complete system during a time of only 4 months. Wenjie was highly motivated and took her job very seriously. She helped me begin my research by thoroughly explaining and teaching me basic research skills. Wenjie taught by example; first she showed me how to perform a certain research skill. Next, we completed that same research skill together. And finally, Wenjie watched as I executed the skill alone and provided help if needed. Wenjie always patiently answered any questions I had regarding my research and encouraged me to reference other scientific works to complement her answers. Wenjie’s expertise in the field of nanoparticle chemistry was evident in both her detailed and comprehensive answers and explanations that she provided. Safety procedures were a high priority for Wenjie and she made sure that I always wore gloves and safety goggles when handling hazardous chemicals. Wenjie also instructed me on how to properly maintain a research notebook which was vital to keeping track of the results and data obtained from my research. She helped me revise my research paper and gave me feedback on how I could improve it.
