As a Geographer through and through, I believe in the importance of spatial thinking in global problem-solving, and see satellite-based remote sensing as a unique and powerful perspective for analysis. My research uses satellite data for monitoring and mapping agricultural characteristics, processes, and outcomes worldwide. I have spent most of my career leading efforts to define satellite data and information requirements for understanding and monitoring agriculture, from field to global scales. I have worked with the world's space agencies to increase acquisition, availability, and continuity of cal/val'd, interoperable satellite data sets for agriculture. Some of the programs I have been instrumental in developing include the G20 Global Agriculture Monitoring (GEOGLAM) Initiative and NASA Harvest, NASA Applied Sciences' Food Security & Agriculture program. As the availability, spatial resolution, and coverage of satellite missions have improved the past few years, I see a crucial need for a neutral, authoritative body to convene multi-disciplinary, trans-sectoral actors that together can improve the science of sub-field to farm-level satellite-based assessment of agriculture, particularly as they pertain to "sustainable," "regenerative," and "climate-smart" management. In 2020, I founded a nonprofit, precompetitive research program - the Harvest Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture (SARA) Initiative - to advance transparent, validated methods and knowledge about adoption and impacts of agriculture management techniques on crop yield, farm profitability, soil health, GHG emissions and reductions, water quality, and air quality. The tools developed in my field can be and have been used in systems of control and oppression, and I bring that consciousness to my work. US agricultural policy and STEM alike have been fairly criticized for excluding Black, Brown, Indigenous, Disabled, LGBTQ+, female, formerly-incarcerated, and otherwise marginalized voices, experiences, expertise, and wisdom, often to the detriment of those very communities and individuals (example literature: Berhe et al., 2022; Toone et al., 2022). Many from those communities have vocalized critiques of the ways in which the geosciences, the academe, and research have contributed to harm; so too have they shared opportunities for genuine contrition, repair, and forward movement (e.g. URGEoscience.org and NoTimeForSilence.org). It is past time to pay attention and repair.

Executive DirectorNasa Acres Jan 2023 - PresentI am the founding Director of NASA Acres, NASA's new U.S.-focused agriculture and food security program. NASA is increasing its decades-long investment in U.S. agriculture through the launch of NASA Acres. This new consortium unites top scientists from physical, social, and economic sciences with agriculture actors from public and private sectors. They have the shared mission to bring NASA data, science, and tools “down-to-Earth” for the benefit of U.S. agriculture. -
Executive DirectorHarvest Sustainable And Regenerative Agriculture Initiative Dec 2020 - PresentThe team behind NASA Harvest – NASA’s global food security and agriculture applications program – has launched an innovative initiative on Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture (SARA) that brings together private and public sectors in a nonprofit pre-competitive forum to strengthen the evidence base for sustainable and regenerative agriculture. The SARA Initiative builds upon NASA Harvest’s world-renown science and relationships with top multi-disciplinary researchers to advance transparent, validated methods and knowledge about adoption and impacts of agriculture management techniques on crop yield, farm profitability, soil health, greenhouse gas emissions and reductions, water quality, and air quality. -

Deputy Director & Program ManagerNasa Harvest Sep 2017 - Mar 2023Www.Nasaharvest.OrgI was the co-founding Deputy Director and Program Manager for NASA Harvest. I stepped up to develop and direct the U.S.-focused sister program NASA Acres in 2023, but I remain an active part of NASA Harvest.NASA has commissioned a new Food Security & Agriculture program outside of its centers, with the program office at the University of Maryland Center for Global Agricultural Monitoring Research (glam.umd.edu). This new program is called NASA Harvest, and it aims to enhance the use of satellite data in decision making related to food security and agriculture, domestically and globally. While led and managed by UMD, it is made up of over 40 international partners from top research universities, humanitarian aid organizations, departments/ministries of agriculture, agribusiness, the financial sector, defense, intelligence, high tech, and beyond. -
Founder And LeadAgricultural Monitoring In The Americas Feb 2018 - Feb 2023Www.Agamericas.OrgThe Agricultural Monitoring in the Americas (AMA) Community of Practice is an open community composed of national and international agencies concerned with agricultural monitoring and food security in the Americas (from Canada to Chile). The AMA is the convening body of GEOGLAM Latinoamérica (G-LA) and the AmeriGEOSS Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture sister initiatives. Both initiatives focus on strengthening national systems’ monitoring capabilities through the use of Earth observations (EO), as well as on fostering with-in-region international collaboration around research and development and operational implementation of monitoring tools for the main crops types and rangeland/pasture areas in the Americas. Through facilitating contact and coordination between researchers and decision-makers at the ministerial level, the AMA’s implementing body (AMA-Working Group) uses EO data to confront challenges around food production, food security, climate change, and sustainable development. -
