About Ally Boyd

I have worked in the MN tech community since 2017, in many different roles including engineer (front end and full stack), UI designer, educator, technical project manager, and engineering manager. All of these roles have allowed me to learn, work with amazing people, and build great products. I love working on collaborative teams and having the opportunity to use technology to solve complex problems. I am passionate about continuous learning and mentorship, both as a mentor and a mentee. Before working in tech, I worked in many customer-facing roles requiring strong communication skills and organization. I love being in highly collaborative and creative environments, where individuals can reach beyond their job descriptions to learn new skills.

    I was an Associate Software Engineer on the Growth team, which gave me the opportunity to contribute to multiple aspects of the product. I worked collaboratively with fellow engineers, designers and other stakeholders within the company to solve problems for our customers. I worked primarily in React and Redux, but also did some backend work in PHP. My team did A/B testing with LaunchDarkly flags and tracking to assess how changes we made affected user behavior. I also wrote unit tests with Jest and Enzyme.Many of my bigger projects involved the onboarding process for new customers, and finding ways to make the process more streamlined and user-friendly.

    While at Prime, I had the opportunity to work on two projects. The first was my solo project, Streamlet. The second was a group project called GrowLog for a local non-profit, Page and Flowers.Streamlet is a full stack web application allowing users to search for shows and movies that are streaming on multiple platforms at once. This is a solution to the problem of needing to search all platforms individually, or use a search that is not user friendly. It can be viewed here: http://shielded-tor-57204.herokuapp.com/GrowLog is a full stack, mobile-friendly web application allowing users to track activities on their farm. They needed to be able to track the activity to single seeds, and this application simplifies this process. It allows users to add tasks that need to be completed, communicate issues, and create reports. It streamlines communication between workers and volunteers, and eliminates the need for double-entering information off of scraps of paper.Prime teaches the MEAN stack. There is an emphasis on both soft and hard skills, with the soft skills coming from Toastmasters, supplemental lectures, and other similar activities.My goal while at Prime was to learn the skills necessary to get an entry level position as a software engineer, being able to contribute to a team.

    I began as a contract employee, providing support to various departments, including Accounting and Human Resources. When the position of payroll clerk unexpectedly opened up, I took on the responsibility while management went through the process of hiring a full-time replacement. I was hired as a full-time employee in December of 2013, as an Administrative Assistant to fill the vacancy I had been helping with. In that role, I was responsible for entering payroll on a daily basis, and entering information for job costing. I was head of a committee in charge of distributing charitable giving funds to local organizations.In March of 2015, I became the assistant to the Production Manager. In addition to the responsibilities I had as an Administrative Assistant, I also would assist with postings, helping employees fill out forms, arrange meetings, work with vendors, and track vacation and absences. I helped Wells Concrete implement a digital time clock system, ensuring that the information gathered by the time clocks matched the hours that the employees worked, and adhered to the various union contract rules for the employees.
