The Food Pharmacy allows us to support these families and help them gain access to healthier food options in their community.Within the Food Pharmacy, my responsibilities include:• Working alongside dietitians, physical activity specialists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, social work and food sponsors.• Meeting with patients and their families to discuss resources for affordable fresh foods in their community. This includes applying for benefits programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), etc.• Screening families for food-insecurity and supplying them with a three-day-supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.• Reviewing patient education materials such as healthy recipes, how to read food labels and using their benefits at local farmers markets.• Training other interns how to place food orders, track data and screen families for food insecurity.• Attended EPIC training for access to electronic medical record.• Attended ServSafe certification for proper food handling.The food pharmacy has given me a unique opportunity to see how food programming can be used in a clinical setting to help patients achieve their health goals.
