Ensuring that the animal use program is in compliance with The Guide, and all regulations and guidelines of agencies including AAALAC, USDA, EH&S, and NIH. Ensuring staff are following established SOPs. Assisting Principal Investigators and research staff with any facility or animal issues, working collaboratively to ensure that their research needs are met. Supervising the daily husbandry operations of the rodent animal husbandry unit across several facilities at Parnassus campus, overseeing more than 25 animal technicians of various levels and over 23,000 cages of animals. Ensuring the animal husbandry, sanitation, caging and maintenance of structures is in compliance with regulations and guidelines set by the department, the campus and governmental agencies. Hiring and training staff, ensuring that all staff are fully trained and that duties of staff are performed in compliance with established protocol. Assisting Principal Investigators and researchers with any issues they may have and work collaboratively to ensure their research needs are met.

Assisting the supervisor in overseeing the daily operations of the rodent husbandry group at Parnassus campus. Ensuring the husbandry practices are in compliance with department guidelines, onboarding and training new husbandry staff. Assisting research staff with any facility or animal issues.

Provide basic veterinary assessment and care of rodents across all UCSF facilities. Conducting health surveillance for rodents and communicating health information to researchers, labs, and veterinarians. Performing surgical and other technical procedures on rodents such as blood collection, necropsies, and tissue collection. Providing training to staff including advanced surgical training, injection and dosing techniques training, health surveillance training to investigators and husbandry staff.

Perform rodent health assessment, describe clinical findings, determine normal from abnormal or experimental-induced conditions, communicate with research staff regarding findings and provide recommendations after consultation with the Veterinarian. Maintain the Sentinel and Quarantine Programs, schedule and perform sample collection, ship samples to the diagnostic laboratories, update records and help report findings. Develop and draft new SOP’s for review by veterinarians, and develop and draft standards appropriate for an AAALAC accredited facility. Analyze lab reports, summarize findings, and communicate findings to veterinarians, researchers and others.

Integral part of the LARC husbandry staff – changing rodent cages, monitoring rodent health, maintaining healthy living conditions for all lab animals, preparing slides for fur mite screenings, preventing outside contamination, reviewing health issues with the veterinary staff, and contacting and communicating with lab personnel regarding animal health & living conditions.

Duties included: Basic receptionist tasks, both in person and text translations, accounting, data entry, customer service, marketing, creating reports, and filing. Awarded Employee Excellence Awards for July and September.

Duties included: cleaning and setting up the exam rooms for appointments, restraining patients for the vet students and doctors, restocking the treatment room, bringing patients from the reception area to the exam rooms, and picking up medication from the pharmacy for the clients.
