This program is a collaborative effort between the Marilyn Magaram Center, CSUN’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and Department of Health Sciences, Los Angeles Mission College, and several USDA agencies in order to support students from underserved communities that want to become registered dietitians. As a CSUN dietetic intern of this program, I provide one-on-one guidance, coaching, support of students, and professional development training to become a competent dietetic internship applicant including workshops, receiving mentoring, USDA scholarships, ServSafe Manager Training and research assistantships.

In this internship, I provided theoretical and practical application of sports nutrition in a collegiate environment. My fellow interns and I created educational materials, recipe handouts, support CSUN Athletic Department social, and additional nutrition related projects. Duties held were the maintenance and further development of fueling station, provide general and sport specific nutrition education, design and develop recipes based on athlete questionnaires/surveys/needs, evaluate athlete questionnaires/surveys and coordinate with other interns in resolving any issues found, collaborate with other interns in creating new projects, lead/guide intern team in sports nutrition related projects, promote engagement between athletes and intern program, research into (new) Sports Nutrition studies and being able to assess nutritional needs and create meal plans.

In this internship, I was teaching students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in addition to parents about the importance of a healthy diet and exercise to increase their knowledge of basic nutrition and healthy eating and to also encourage them to practice healthy eating behaviors at home. This will give children a role model to follow and an opportunity to practice at home the nutrition education concepts learned in their classroom.
