It was an incredibly humbling and eye-opening experience tutoring Sangeethan, a 16-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee, during his first schoolyear in America. My focus was his mathematic comprehension, but I was also responsible for his social transition. Not only did his mathematics grade and overall GPA improve drastically, moving from a C average to an A, he was quickly familiarized with the cultural norms of the United States. In the process I got to learn about his ethnical background and incredibly adverse circumstances. Witnessing firsthand as he formed a new personal identity, helped me gain insight into the immense influence of society on a person’s sense of individuality.
