As a Senior Program Analyst in preparedness and response, I focus on emerging health security-related activities. These activities include CSTE’s public health preparedness and response efforts, including response to real-world events including COVID-19, SUDV EVD in Uganda, MPOX, and others. I serve as the staff lead for the Disaster Epidemiology Subcommittee and its workgroups; the Disaster Epidemiology Subcommittee brings together STLT epidemiologists and other partners in preparedness and response to collaborate on improving all-hazard preparedness and response. Ongoing projects within the Disaster Epidemiology portfolio include the annual CSTE Disaster Epidemiology Workshop and modernizing shelter surveillance In addition to the Disaster Epidemiology portfolio, I oversee the Border/International Health portfolio and related projects. Border/International Health projects and areas of interest include binational surveillance and disease reporting, refugee health, migration and international determinants of health and emergency preparedness and response along the border. I also serve as the staff lead for the Public Health Emergency Preparedness subcommittee. In addition to programmatic and real-world response operations, preparedness and readiness at the CSTE National Office is a key aspect of my position. These efforts include coordinating and conducting preparedness and response trainings and exercises, and developing and maintaining plans.

As Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Coordinator, I worked alongside community partners on the local, regional and state level to ensure overall preparedness for public health emergencies ranging from natural disasters to disease outbreaks and man-made incidents, including leading public health planning, response, and operations efforts during COVID-19. Key roles of the PHEP Coordinator include development and maintenance of response plans for the county and health department, serving as health department Safety Officer, training coordinator, functioning as a public information officer (PIO) as necessary and representing public health on the Local Emergency Planning Committee. Within the local emergency operations center, I served as the ESF (Essential Support Function) #8, Public Health & Medical Services Coordinator. I served as the regional contact for emergency preparedness for the Wildcat Public Health Region, a tri-county region, managing both local and regional grant dollars. I also served as a unit coordinator for the Wildcat Region Medical Reserve Corps (MRC); in this role, I actively recruited volunteers and planed trainings and outreach events for Riley County and regional partners. Served as the Vice Chairman of the Northeast Kansas Healthcare Coalition, a Coalition with representation from public health, emergency management, hospitals, EMS, and other healthcare providers in a 24-county region. Along with focusing on emergency preparedness, I also served a role in disease surveillance and investigation as the epidemiologist on staff – collaborating with the health department’s communicable disease nurse, clinic supervisor and other medical partners at the county, region and state level. As an epidemiologist, I sat on the Statewide Syndromic Surveillance Governance Group, with epidemiologists from throughout the state, served as the RCHD Epidemiology Team leader and assisted in conducting regional epidemiology surveillance calls.

As an intern in the Emergency Preparedness division of the Department I worked alongside emergency planners, epidemiologists, and communicable disease nurses, among others; this was truly a collaborative position where members of the health department, county and state officials, and representatives from the private sector all worked together for the same common goal - public health, safety, and preparedness. There were two major projects I undertook during my time with the health department; one project dealt with creating a county-wide database to be used in case of emergency/disaster situations. This database included contact information for businesses, schools, hospitals, as well as personal contact information for individuals in the community who would be called into action in the wake of an emergency. In the second major project, I helped plan and carry out a large scale mass-prophylaxis exercise where I served as a Logistics Manager at one of the sites. I reviewed grant proposals as well, and recruited volunteers for both the large-scale exercise and local volunteer groups.
