Profile bio

About Amanda Abel

I’m a paediatric psychologist, mum, registered SOS feeding therapist, founder of Northern & Hawthorn Centre for Child Development, and co-founder of Toddler Toolkit. Another hat I wear is the resident psychologist at TotallyAwesome, where I help make the internet safer for kids.Working directly and indirectly with hundreds of clients each year, my mission is for every child to achieve their best outcomes by equipping families, educators, corporate and health professionals with the tools they need to help kids thrive.Appearing on Channel 7 and 9 News and regularly featuring in print media, I contributed to Finch Publishing’s “Working Mums” book, where I shared my insights about juggling a business and parenting. So, to the busy parents out there – I get you! Clinically, and as you’ll see if you work with me, I draw on my own experiences of being a parent along with my extensive training and well-honed skill set to get kids thriving. Having worked with families for almost two decades, as a psychologist for the past 14 years in a variety of settings, and a valued former board member of the Autism Behavioural Intervention Association, I love building the confidence of the adults in the lives of children so that they can connect meaningfully, help them reach their full potential, and live a life that reflects their values. While working as an Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapist during my tertiary studies, I developed a particular interest in early intervention for children with autism, developmental delays, disabilities and challenging behaviours. My honours thesis investigated the social skills, friendship expectations and attention of high functioning children with autism, and this was presented in 2004 at the 3rd Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Forum, Melbourne.I'm a registered Circle of Security Parenting educator which has greatly influenced the way I work with my clients. I'm also a registered SOS Feeding Therapist - one of the few evidence based interventions for children who are problem feeders

Listed skills include Psychology, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Counseling Psychology, Psychological Assessment, and 15 others.

Co-Founder

Together with esteemed paediatrician Dr Daniel Golshevsky, we've created the Toddler Toolkit to empower parents with the confidence and knowledge they need to be able to handle challenging toddler behaviour. It's an online, self-paced course with 15 modules that covers everything about parenting kids aged 1-5. You know how parenting a toddler is hard? Like, irrational tantrums, biting, hitting, refusing to do ANYTHING they’ve been asked unless the instruction is sung to the tune of Peppa Pig, refusing to get in the car then you can’t get them out. You get the drift. Well, as pretty experienced paediatric practitioners, we have heard it all. And we’ve experienced it ourselves as parents too. So, due to frequent requests over the years, we developed a product designed to HELP! Toddler Toolkit is a one-stop shop for all things parenting those little people aged 1-5. It’s an online program - the only course of its kind in the WORLD written by a paediatrician and paediatric psychologist. Our course contains 15 modules to cover every challenge and stage of the toddler years. And it is FAR from boring!Everything in the program is evidence-based and uses gentle parenting techniques. There are no criticisms or unrealistic expectations - this is all about empowering parents to feel confident in parenting toddlers.

Consultant Paediatric Psychologist To Companies And Brands

Freelance

Having the niche insights and knowledge from an experienced and media-trained paediatric psychologist is an asset to companies and brands who engage with kids, teens and parents. My passion for sharing knowledge about children and parenting gets me closer to my goal of making the world better for kids - whether that's through sharing content that encourages meaningful connection between kids and parents, or educating the world about the importance of protecting children online. I've been engaged to work with companies to provide developmental knowledge about children and teens that can help them better understand their audience contextually, promote brands at events and on mainstream television programs, create social media content that is evidence-based and straight from the psychologist's mouth (and not an 'influencer'!) and provide psychological expertise to product development in the child and baby verticals.

Founding Director

Preston, Victoria, Au

My second child, the Northern (and Hawthorn) Centre for Child Development was born after I almost experienced burn-out as a psychologist! Now many years on, and employing over 10 psychologists and an incredible admin team, our practices support thousands of families each year by equipping parents and caregivers with the tools they need to help kids thrive.

Paediatric Psychologist

Singapore, Singapore, Sg

As the resident psychologist at TotallyAwesome, I work across the company to provide child psychology insights both in-house and externally. With my extensive experience and knowledge as a paediatric/child psychologist, I help brands really understand their child and teen audience from a contextual perspective. Making sure brands interact responsibly and ethically with kids and teens is also a big part of this role, as I make recommendations not only about the best ways to engage with specific cross-cultural audiences, but also about keeping kids safe.
