Provide continuing health education support for allied health professionals in the Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems (NHHCS) and other Hawaiian-serving organizations and agencies, according to assessed needs of health professionals serving Native Hawaiian & Other Pacific Island communities with input from Papa Ola Lōkahi’s Master Plan Education & Training subcommittee. Highlights of specific duties: carries out initial and on-going training needs assessments; identifies funding resources for department initiatives and positions; organizes, arranges and facilitates intensive training - topics are informed by needs assessments; arranges and facilitates “just-in-time” training sessions on emergent topics determined by on-going assessment, or to address a rapidly developing/changing situation; arranges and facilitates continuing education sessions to supplement the intensive and just-in-time training - topics determined by surveys of and evaluation feedback from trained patient navigators and other allied health professionals, as well as needs assessments; arranges and facilitates networking events for NHHCS allied health professionals and related health experts in the community, as well as allied and other health professionals at partner agencies and organizations in the community.

Lead the Hawai‘i Cancer Consortium’s (Consortium) patient navigation program development efforts, assisting Consortium medical centers to establish and integrate patient navigation processes or programs into their constellations of cancer care. Specific tasks are to 1) assist staff at each hospital to plan and complete a community needs assessment and an internal assessment for patient navigation; 2) provide and facilitate patient navigation training and continuing education for hospital navigators; 3) provide technical assistance on navigation program development and data capture; 4) support facilities in fashioning patient navigation programs that are best for them by communicating patient navigation models and sharing sample program policies; 5) inform investigators and Consortium of program development progress; 6) supervise and coordinate health educator, volunteers, and others associated with the project 7) assist PI with preparation of IRB applications, report, grant and manuscript writing for peer-reviewed journals; 8) present program process and findings to lay and professional audiences at local, national and international meetings; 9) work with PI to develop and implement evaluation plan for the training program and navigation programs; 10) maintain professional growth in patient navigation related topics by attending skills development training and continuing education classes; 11) perform other related duties as assigned. These three positions: Research Assistant at Papa Ola Lokahi, Program Coordinator at The Queen's Medical Center, and Project Specialist at University of Hawai'i Manoa, were all working with the team at 'Imi Hale Native Hawaiian Cancer Network (a Program of Papa Ola Lokahi). Funding for the work I did came from different places - hence the different positions. The work progressed from adapting the Ho'okele i ke Ola Cancer Patient Navigation curriculum to a remote version, to lead trainer/curriculum developer, to growing the program to include continuing education and networking for those who were trained, to creating a cancer patient navigation training toolkit for other organizations.

Responsible for day-to-day program management of the HRSA Cancer Patient Navigation (CPN) Program at The Queen’s Medical Center, assisting the PI with subcontracts and hiring. Work with `Imi Hale to organize orientation and training, work with the Clinical Specialist to assess knowledge and skills of CPNs, coordinate and supervise activities of the CPNs, be available to CPNs to answer non-clinical questions, coordinate monthly supervisory meetings, work with the Evaluator to train the CPNs in data collection, enter site-wide data from CPNs. Work with the Evaluator to check data accuracy and quality, conduct impact-testing. Participate in monthly HRSA calls and annual Peer Learning.

Assist in developing and carrying out initiatives of `Imi Hale Native Hawaiian Cancer Network. Develop cancer patient navigation curriculum, organize and deliver training sessions involving numerous faculty from the medical community and the community at-large, support and provide continuous training support to a network of cancer patient navigators, maintain a large reference bibliography, develop and test educational materials, help develop data-collection systems and disseminate program information. Organize and carry out an annual patient navigation conference.
