Assistant Professor
My research focuses on how cells measure their ratios of nuclei to cytoplasm (also called the N/C ratio to time the maternal to zygotic transition (MZT). This major embryonic event requires the activation of transcription of the zygotic genome be coordinated with major changes in the cell cycle. We have uncovered important roles for histone abundance of histones and changes in chromatin state in regulating the transition. We use a variety of techniques including quantitative imaging, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and modeling address these questions. Our primary system is Drosophila. In the future, I intend to continue to work on cell size control in other tissues and eventually organ size control.
Lewis-Sigler Fellow
As a Lewis-Sigler Fellow I have had the opportunity to run an independent lab directly after finishing my PhD. As a Fellow I have mentored 2 PostDocs, 3 technicians, and several undergraduate students. I also lead one course per year, QCB 302.
