When I was a child, I always proudly told people that "I'm gonna be a scientist when I grow up!"Well, several years of school and a year of undergraduate research later and here I am.I began my education to obtain an BS in biology with a minor in chemistry in 2016. My courses included statistics, calculus I and II, psychology, sociology, structural and functional biology/lab, marine biology/lab, molecular biology/lab, gross anatomy/lab, cellular biology/lab, genetics/lab, organic chemistry/lab, and biochemistry. During my undergraduate education, I conducted research studying the role of neuronal mitogens in regard to the proteins merlin and ezrin in immortalized Schwann cells. This not only taught me techniques such as sterile cell culture, western blotting, immunofluorescence, and data analysis, but also gave me a sense of responsibility that came with caring for the cells. As my time as an undergraduate was coming to a close, I was also given the vital role of training the students that would take over my project once I graduated. I was fortunate enough to present the findings of my research at the 2019 ASCB/EMBO Conference in Washington D.C. While I was working on my degree, I knew it would be beneficial to improve my employment skills outside of my university. Thus, I began work as an associate at Pier 1 Imports. This job challenged me to meet and work with customers from all walks of life. It also gave me the opportunity to look at my work through a more interpersonal lens instead of the mathematical and logical way I was used to. During my time there my managers praised my patience and my politeness towards customers.On my off-time, I volunteer at rallies and events, such as the "Future to Believe In" rally and "Bikes for Tykes." These events are to ensure that the generation being brought up today can live in a more compassionate world. I am also a regular blood donor for American Red Cross to do my part for those that rely on blood donations. For fun, I enjoy marathons such as Spartan racing and the Yes.Fit "Save the Manatees" race.In closing, I want to give back to the world in the best way I know how: through my love of science.
