About Amanda Burrell

Amanda is a multi award-winning filmmaker with 25 years’ experience of making programmes for international television channels including BBC, Al Jazeera English, A&E and Discovery. She is rare in the market with the experience and ability to conceive and create programmes and also to bring them to life from both sides of the camera: anchoring from the studio, reporting from the field, producing, directing and shooting. In addition, she has extensive experience of building and supervising teams and managing channel strategy, budgets and schedules. For the past seven years, Amanda has focussed exclusively on making programmes that provide insight into and solutions for the biggest story of our time: the global environmental crisis. She is passionate about using her role in the media to inspire and mobilise action.Most recently working with Al Jazeera English, Amanda executive produces and sometimes hosts "earthrise", the channel’s flagship environmental show which has won many awards including from The Association of International Broadcasters, One World Media, and Covering Climate Now. She also presented the network’s current affairs series, "Planet SOS", which she was instrumental in getting commissioned. Prior to this, she was In House Manager for Al Jazeera Turk in Istanbul, building and managing a team of award-winning filmmakers and overseeing the channel's extensive documentary output as well as being heavily involved in strategy and management. Amanda has executive produced, directed, presented and filmed documentaries, current affairs, specialist factual and historical programmes around the world, covering subjects as diverse as the Ottoman harem for Channel 4, rewilding mined land in Indonesia and saving the Iberian lynx for Al Jazeera English and, for the BBC, glacial melt in Peru and anorexia in India. Her most personal film, for the Al Jazeera Correspondent series, followed her as she decided whether or not to freeze her eggs.Earlier in her career, Amanda was Assistant Producer on several landmark history series including “The Greeks “(Atlantic for BBC2/DDE) and “Ancient Inventions” (Seventh Art for Discovery). She worked with Melvyn Bragg on his landmark series about the history of Christianity, “2000 Years”, and she was in the BBC History Department, headed by Laurence Rees, where she worked on “Timewatch" for two years.
