Assigned to work group focused on goal # 2; “To improve the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and management of COPD by improving the quality of care delivered across the healthcare continuum.” Presented work group findings with Dr. Byron Thomashow of the COPD Foundation (outside of the general session). CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT: Designed and implemented a protocol system in which providers signed off to allow fluidity in care to meet Expert Panel Report (best practices) guidelines-based care. Managed all business and clinical aspects of service, including contract negotiation and process development. Clinically identify, track, trend, and manage pediatric asthma patients through in-office educational interventions in conjunction with diagnostic testing. Provided feedback to physicians and practice management regarding patient compliance and outcomes for quality reporting data (HEDIS, MACRA).Asthma ABC clinical operations were brought under the Carolina Diagnostic Solutions umbrella as the Clinical Services Division in March 2015.

BRONCHOSCOPY TEAM LEAD. Responsibilities included communicating with physicians to make process improvements, organizing procedure data for a monthly review, coordinating, and completing skills validation of staff members. Communicated across the health system regarding guideline changes, procedure updates, and equipment maintenance. Responsible for creating in-services and related continuing education to peers in written and verbal form. Responsible for clinical competency review and certification for 32+ staff. I worked directly with the equipment vendor to ensure compliance with manufacturer quality control, maintenance, and pulmonary and burn unit hardware repairs. SPECIAL PROJECTS AND RESEARCH: Initiated bronchoscopy research data collection as liaison for medical director with the goal of determining sample changes resulting in lavage and/or suction technique. Tasked with an Internal project from the department director to write a protocol to collect indirect resting metabolic (REE) data from intubated (critically ill) patients. Acted as a liaison to burn unit staff to collect metabolic data to assess this population's rapidly changing metabolic and caloric intake needs. TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER: Updated policy and procedures for clinical procedures. Conducted technical bronchoscopy training for fellows and rotating residents. Worked with PFT vendor as beta site for software upgrade and database networking status. Responsible for writing training material and presenting software changes through in-person training to lab staff across 4 campuses. RESPIRATORY CARE: Perform respiratory care in a variety of settings including critical care and management of mechanical ventilation on wide range of pediatric population across ER, level 4 NICU, CVICU, PICU, and burn Units.ASSISTANT CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR: Assisted department educators annually with ALS and CPR competency for all system staff (~ 200 RTs).

Leadership in an outpatient pulmonary team. My role transitioned from bedside RT into a managerial role at the Asthma Center in 2003. Responsibilities included making contact with in patients and ED patients to start education process and follow up post discharge, conducted monthly better breathers program, and spoke to new RN orientation. As a member of the RT department, I provided adult emergency, critical, and neonatal care. DIAGNOSTIC PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTING: Performed complete pulmonary function (PFT) studies, including diffusion, lung volume, bronchial (methacholine) challenges, ABG’s, nocturnal and exercise pulse ox studies, etc. Worked closely with pulmonary and allergy specialists in 2 counties across four sites to coordinate outpatient care in a rural area. Developed smoking cessation program in conjunction with writing asthma education materials used in practice.

FACILITATED: Four-week smoking cessation programs using American Cancer Society materials. Presented information and led discussions with participants to address behavioral and lifestyle changes and medication therapy strategies for success. VOLUNTEER: specialty staff in the free clinic with pulmonary physician providers to perform spirometry and disease management for chronic lung disease populations.
