In 2008 I graduated with my degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. After thirteen years of scanning it became necessary to change careers. Sonography requires a vast knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, critical thinking, and communication skills. I also learned about CPT and ICD-10 codes related to ultrasound procedures and appropriate diagnosis codes. While working in the radiology department I also performed many of the office duties. Some of these duties include answering the phone, using the copy and fax machine, and burning CDs with studies for patients or health care facilites. At times it was necessary to reschedule patient appointments and communicate with doctor's offices and other hospital staff. I also have experience with EPIC, Meditech, GE ViewPoint, and Ramsoft, along with helping with administrative duties for the PACs system. These helped to strengthen my communication and customer service skills.I enjoy working in the medical field and I wanted to find a way to apply my knowledge to my new career. This is how I chose Health Information Technology/Coding. While working on my degree I have been working at Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center as a Referral Authorization Coordinator. I process incoming and outgoing referrals for the cancer center. I also review insurance for eligibility, benefits, and network status. And process release of information for continuity of care.I graduated in December and currently looking for a coding position and preparing for my RHIT examination.
