I have been blessed with and have acquired through various life experiences an abundance of specific skills and abilities necessary to work with children therapeutically. My high level of patience, persuasive and encouraging attitude, as well as my overall compassion and devotion to children are essential skills needed when working with individuals who have a variety of special needs. Imagination and creativity, as well as a good sense of humor are significant characteristics needed to adapt activities to the individual needs of my patients and to excite and motivate them to participate and open up to me emotionally. Demonstrating my active listening skills, ability to be socially perceptive, and problem sensitivity are also be beneficial in my chosen career.I have had great success and enjoyed very much being an active and integral part of a therapy team. I enjoy thinking outside the box and have used this ability to implement creative and imaginative solutions to challenging situations and individual patient needs. My ability to look critically at my own performance and to assess my personal effectiveness have afforded me the opportunity to change my approach when necessary and to seek advice as needed, making me an active and productive member of a multi-faceted therapy team. My willingness to appreciate the unique contributions of others as well as my organizational, time management and communicative skills have made me an effective team leader as well.

  My specific tasks and responsibilities as an intern included conducting therapeutic recreation patient intake assessments, analyzing and interpreting results and developing an individualized intervention plan, implementing and leading group sessions, processing sessions with clients, planning and facilitating therapeutically beneficial activities and programs and creating detailed activity and program plans, monitoring effectiveness of interventions, and observing person served for response to intervention and documenting those observations and responses in weekly treatment notes, developing and providing processing work and group homework, actively contributing to the patients individualized treatment plan by attending weekly treatment team meetings and discussing and evaluating changes in client’s function, effectiveness of treatment interventions and treatment plan revisions, recording identified strengths, skills and abilities, recommendations for maintaining and developing skills and abilities and suggestions for future involvement and participation in leisure and recreation programs and activities in the patients discharge plan, and planning, promoting and facilitating a campus wide special event. As an intern, I was exposed to and gained experience in all aspects of the Therapeutic Recreation profession as it relates to patient care and gained an understanding of the duties, roles, and responsibilities of a full time Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
