My role within The Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation (IAMI) is to direct product development focused translational research within the University of Kansas Cancer Center, The University of Kansas, as well as with our external for-profit and not-for-profit partners. We recruit multi-disciplinary teams of bench scientists, clinical researchers, and statisticians to advance promising therapeutics from early concept to clinical trials, ie: bench-to-bedside. My responsibilities include managing multiple project-based research teams which are cancer or rare disease focused, as well as serving on steering committees to evaluate Investigator Initiated Trial concepts and early proof-of-concept bench projects. In addition to evaluating the scientific merits of existing proposals, I generate new project ideas from new literature or bedside observations. Furthermore, I am engaged with our entrepreneurs-in-residence, venture capital partners, and intellectual property attorneys to write investment memos which detail and evaluate the future financial and business implications of projects. Additionally, I organize and write academic grants, government small business grants, progress reports, and scientific manuscripts as well as representing our group through webinars, patient-outreach events, and scientific conferences.
