Previously, I was student teaching at St. Patricks School of Smithtown in second grade and fourth grade. The second grade and fourth grade class was a regular general education class. During these student teaching placements I learned how to create and use flashcards for individualized instruction with spelling words for an Autistic student, engaged with a hard of hearing student to help her effectively score on her i-Ready, learned how to differentiate work for students who work slower than others by allowing them to complete one morning work worksheet rather than two, and engaged with my co-teacher to discuss a student’s repetitive behavior resulting in an evaluation by the nurse. Currently, I am in a lifeskills classroom where I have 4 Autistic students, 1 Multiple Disabled students, 1 Intellectually Disabled student, 2 Speech and Language Impaired students, and 1 Learning Disabled student. In this student teaching position I have done many things like: collaborated with cooperating teacher to create a modified school schedule for a student with medical problems, collaborated with other employees to establish a plan for students next year during annual review meetings, created a behavior plan for an Autistic student to be more responsive in class to adults and peers, and understood how to write an IEP through IEP Direct to ensure the student is getting all the modifications and accommodations to learn to their ability.
