Still on fire for teaching art in my 15th year, I am finally serving high school students and I could not be more thrilled! The best part of each day is watching students take initiative in their own work. I teach Photography and Art 2 to a wonderful group of 9-10th graders. Guided by the TN Standards of Visual Art, my students are trained to create art, respond to art, connect art to the world, and present it to the world in a meaningful way. Along with these standards, students are nurtured in the development of the Studio Habits of Mind, where thinking critically and problem solving become habits. The art teacher is most often the first professional artist a child has ever met – and the impression lasts a lifetime. Art is the work of the soul, which requires calculated care. I feel this must be factored in to the education equation!
