As a Registered Nurse in the Family Birthing Center, I help to provide care to Antepartum, Intrapartum, Postpartum as well as Gynecology clients in the hospital setting. General duties include caring for the new mother during the labor process, assisting with the delivery, post-delivery care for both mothers and babies and educating parents on infant care. I also assist in the operating room with Cesarean deliveries. Responsibilities also include ensuring that health and emotional needs of the mothers are met adequately throughout the entire process of childbirth. Safe care is provided through constant assessment of the situation, and quickly reacting when necessary. I also serve as a member of our Unit Practice Council, as well as a member of the Safe Sleep sub-committee unit, where I have been tasked with developing an action plan to decrease the incidence of mortality secondary to SIDS in infant born at our birthing center. These action plans required research to update policies, and develop a training program to educate the nursing staff.

Additional responsibilities when assigned as Charge Nurse included supervising unit operations such as patient assignments, care, admissions, transfers, and discharges, as well as various administrative duties such as scheduling and staffing. I also floated to the level II Special Care Nursery to ensure staffing requirements were met. I served as the unit representative for the Medstar Falls and Skin Champion program, where I was tasked with developing an action plan to decrease inpatient falls and the incidence of hospital acquired pressure injuries. These action plans required research to update policies, and develop and educate the clinical staff during the unit-based competency validation program. I also initiated and coordinated the Perinatal loss and Bereavement program for our hospital.
