As an Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist (OCPS) since 2016, I support individuals, schools and other community organizations throughout Ohio as a TOT in the following Evidence-Based programs:Sources of Strength, Mental Health First Aid, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Teen Mental Health First Aid, Student Assistant Programming (SAP), Staff Wellness, CADCA Youth Key Essentials, Prime for Life, Alcohol Literacy Challenge, PAX GBG/Heroes/Tools, Trauma 101, QPR Gatekeeper Training, Wellity Education (Youth Yoga Project), Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP), SBIRT, Hidden in Plain Sight, DBT Steps A, Minimize Risk/Maximize LifeL, Botvin LifeSkills, GenRX, Addiction Policy Forum (APF) EnCompass, Catch My Breath, Risky Business, Triple P, Stanford VAPE, Stress First Aid, NOVA - NOVA Community Crisis Response Team Training, Stacked Deck, Strengthening Families, HOPE Curriculum - Heroin and Opioid Prevention Education, Signs of Suicide – SOS, Beyond Differences and Sandy Hook.Prevention Science: Utilizes SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and implement Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Evidence-Based strategies, at dosages across developmental levels, to promote healthy living; reduce the occurrence of mental health problems; delay the onset of problems; reduce the severity of problems; increase self-regulation and management skills to individuals and communities. The steps of the SPF include: Needs Assessment -What is the problem, and how can I learn more?; Build Capacity - What do I have to work with (people, funding, space)?; Plan - What should I do and how should I do it?; Implement -How can I put my plan into action?; and Evaluate - Is my plan succeeding?. The SPF also includes two guiding principles: Cultural Competence - The ability to interact effectively with members of diverse populations and Sustainability - The process of achieving and maintaining long-term results. CSAP strategies consist of: Information Dissemination – One-way communication; Education – Two-way communication, interactive and skill building; Alternatives – Healthy activities like dances, community service, etc.; Environmental – Changes of community standards through policy change, social norm campaigns, etc.; Community Based Process - Coalitions, Youth-Led Prevention, and networking; and Problem ID and Referral – Identifying and connecting individuals to prevention and treatment services through usage of a screening tools.
